Northern Guam Soil & Water Conservation District Announces 2026 Farmers of the Year

On Guam, “May Harvest” is an annual agricultural celebration that recognizes the island’s farming community, local food production, and the harvest season. Traditionally held during Farmers Appreciation Week, the event highlights Guam’s agricultural heritage through local produce showcases, farming exhibits, educational demonstrations, and community engagement activities that promote food sustainability and resiliency efforts across the island.

These annual awards recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding commitment to agricultural production, conservation practices, and the long-term sustainability of Guam’s natural resources. The recognition also serves to promote awareness of the importance of local farming in strengthening food security and supporting Guam’s economy.

The Northern Guam Soil & Water Conservation District proudly announced Ernest “Ernie” Wusstig as the 2026 Northern Farmer of the Year and Katherine Perez as the 2026 Junior Farmer of the Year in recognition of their exceptional dedication to agriculture and their contributions to Guam’s farming community.

Ernest “Ernie” Wusstig was selected as the 2026 Northern Farmer of the Year for his continued leadership in farming and his dedication to improving agricultural productivity and land stewardship practices. Utilizing innovative no-till farming techniques, Wusstig has successfully cultivated high-quality sweet corn while promoting soil health and sustainable agricultural practices. His work reflects a strong commitment to sustaining local agriculture and supporting community-based farming efforts across Guam.

Katherine Perez was named the 2026 Junior Farmer of the Year in recognition of her enthusiasm for agriculture, active involvement in farming activities, and commitment to learning and growing within the agricultural field. Perez cultivates mint, basil, and a variety of local crops including suni (taro), sigidiyas (wing beans), and kalamasa (pumpkin). Her recognition highlights the importance of encouraging youth participation in agriculture and developing the next generation of farmers on Guam.

The awardees were honored during the annual May Harvest celebration, a community event that brings together farmers, educators, government partners, and families to celebrate Guam’s agricultural heritage. The event showcases local produce, farming achievements, and ongoing efforts to preserve and advance agricultural practices across the island.

The Northern Guam Soil & Water Conservation District continues to support programs and initiatives that promote soil and water conservation, sustainable land management, and agricultural education. Through these efforts, the District works closely with local farmers and community partners to ensure the continued growth and resilience of Guam’s agricultural sector.
